
The Expert Group consists of two activities focusing on Speech-to-Speech Translation and Asian Language Resources. While the two activities share some common interest on language communication, there are basic differences in focus of discussion and in approach to the standardization process.
Objectives:
We have so far engaged in parts of languages in APT region i.e., Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Indonesian, Malay, Vietnamese, and Hindi in the A-STAR project. To cover more languages in APT region, the following works will be continued.
Spoken language communication part:
a) To survey and discuss language specific issues in APT region for spoken language communication.
b) To survey and discuss speech processing technologies in the region
c) To increase the number of Speech Processing (SP) experts in the region.
d) To publish recommendations and documentations to international, and regional standardization activities.
e) To construct and deliver the sample spoken language communication applications and language services which have been developed based on the recommendations and the evaluation results.
ALR (Asian Language Resources) part:
f) To produce annotated multi-lingual corpora focusing on the languages used in the region.
g) To produce annotated multi-lingual technical terms, dictionaries and ontology focusing on the languages used in the region.
h) To increase the number of Natural Language Processing (NLP) experts in the region.
i) To work on recommendation and documentation for standardization to international and regional standardization activities.
j) To construct and deliver the sample applications and language services which have been developed based on the recommendations and the evaluation results.
