Recent Events                    

4th Meeting of the APT Preparatory Group for WTDC-17
(APT WTDC17-4)
7 - 10 August 2017, Malaysia

 

The 4th Meeting of APT Preparatory Group for WTDC-17 (APT WTDC17-4) was held from 7 to 10 August 2017 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia (KKMM) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Malaysia. Honorable Dato' Jailani Johari, Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Malaysia inaugurated the meeting.

 

APT WTDC17-4 was attended by 127 participants from APT Members, Affiliate Members, International/Regional Organizations, other organization. The meeting successfully met all the objectives and developed Preliminary APT Common Proposals (PACPs) for WTDC-17. 30 Preliminary APT Common Proposals which include ITU-D Action Plan, WTDC-17 Declaration, ITU Strategic Plan and WTDC Resolutions have been sent to APT Members for their endorsement.

 

The meeting also discussed the nomination of the office bearer for WTDC-17 and proposed the schedule of APT Coordination Meetings at WTDC-17. WTDC-17 will be convened in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 9 to 20 October 2017.

SATRC Workshop on Spectrum

16 - 18 August 2017, Islamabad, Pakistan

 

The South Asian Telecommunication Regulators’ Council Workshop on Spectrum was held from 16 to 18 August 2017 in Islamabad, Pakistan. The workshop was hosted by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). A total of 66 participants from SATRC member countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Islamic Republic of Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka), Republic of Indonesia and Affiliate Members of APT. Local participants were from PTA, Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT), Frequency Allocation Board (FAB) of Pakistan and industries.

 

The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Sysed Ismail Shah, Chairman of PTA and by Ms. Areewan Haorangsi, Secretary General of APT. The inaugural address was delivered by Mr. Mudassar Hussain, Member (Telecom), MoITT, Pakistan.

 

As part of the implementation of SATRC Action Plan Phase VI under the capacity building initiatives, the workshop focused on four major topics related to the work items of SATRC Working Group Spectrum, i.e. developing roadmap for mobile broadband, spectrum management for the deployment of IoT, wireless backhaul and proliferation of Wi-Fi networks.

 

During the workshop, SATRC Member regulators shared their recent development in the areas of the above work items as well as their experience and the challenges. A number of eminent speakers from academia and industry were also invited to provide in-depth analysis of the work items and key points that need to be considered for developing policy and regulatory aspects of those work items. APT Secretariat also provided detailed information regarding the activities of APT on the area of spectrum management along with preparation for World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-19) and APT Frequency Information System.

 

The next SATRC Workshop will be held in first quarter of 2018 in Islamic Republic of Iran on the topic “Emerging Technologies” such as 5G and IoT.

29th APT Standardization Program Forum (ASTAP-29)

22 - 25 August 2017, Bangkok, Thailand

 

The 29th APT Standardization Program Forum (ASTAP-29) was held from 22 to 25 August in Bangkok, Thailand. A total of 129 participants from APT Members, Affiliate Members and other organization attended the meeting.

 

ASTAP-29 started with a half-day Standardization Workshop which included 7 speakers from Standards Development Organizations (SDOs). The workshop offered a platform to learn about the activities of SDOs and identify challenges of developing countries in ICT standardization as well as best practice to address these challenges.

 

ASTAP-29 received 86 input contributions and information documents. The meeting produced a total of 23 Output Documents which include Updated List of ASTAP Office Bearers, Advisory Board Report, Report of Ad-hoc group on Industry Workshop, Reports of 3 Working Groups, Revised Work Plans of 3 Working Groups, 2 documents on revised ToRs of Expert Group and Working Group, 4 Liaison Statements to ITU-T Study Group 9 and 16, 2 Revised APT Reports, 1 new APT Report, 4 Questionnaires, and 1 Recommendation on Standard Specification of Information and Communication System using Vehicle during Disaster.

 

The next meeting (ASTAP-30) has been planned for 5 days, tentatively from 21 to 25 May 2018, including one day “Industry Workshop”.

Upcoming Events

14th APT Telecommunication/ ICT Development Forum (ADF-14)

5 - 8 September 2017, Manila, Philippines

 

APT in collaboration with Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will organize the 14th APT Telecommunications/ICT Development Forum (ADF-14) from 5 to 6 September 2017, and 2017 Digital Strategies for Development Forum (2017 DSDF) from 7 to 8 September 2017 at ADB Headquarters in Manila, the Philippines. The events will be hosted by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Philippines. The objectives of ADF-14 are:

·         To bring the focus of policy makers, regulators and industry representatives of ICT sector in the region towards the development process of the Strategic Plan of the APT for 2018-2020, and to contribute ideas for further elaboration of the plan;

·         To report outcomes and achievements of APT projects;

·         To discuss on the issues relevant for deploying cost efficient broadband networks; and

·         To discuss on the issues for extending connectivity to unserved/underserved population

 

The objectives of 2017 DSDF are:

·         To highlight the next wave of technologies and their influence on private and public spaces and discuss yet unexplored area for development;

·         To examine trends and implications of ICT in the education sector for digital economy;

·         To examine how cities around the world evolve to “smart cities” that use the insurmountable data available to influence decisions and drive changes towards better urban development; and

·         To discuss the importance of collaboration with relevant organizations.

22nd Meeting of APT Wireless Group (AWG-22)

25 - 29 September 2017, Busan, Republic of Korea

 

APT will organize the 22nd Meeting of APT Wireless Group (AWG-22) from 25 to 29 September 2017 in Busan, Republic of Korea. The meeting will be hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), Republic of Korea.

 

The APT Wireless Group (AWG) is covering various aspects of emerging wireless systems to meet the upcoming digital convergence era in the Asia-Pacific region. It is also assisting the process of providing cost effective radiocommunication solutions and facilitating the transfer of technology. At its 22nd meeting, AWG will report the progress of its activities carried out to date.

8th APT Cybersecurity Forum (CSF-8)

24 - 26 October 2017, Dhaka, Bangladesh

 

APT will organize the 8th APT Cybersecurity Forum (CSF-8) from 24 to 26 October 2017 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The forum will be hosted by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and supported by the Extra Budgetary Contributions from Australia and Japan.

 

CSF-8 will focus on the topic “Cybersecurity on Data Driven Society”, to address the security aspects of data utilization in the digital society including personal data protection and privacy issue. It is also expected to discuss current trends and threats as seen by government, industry, and society in facilitating an enabling environment/framework where there is a reasonable balance between utilization and protection of data.

Preparatory Meeting for the 14th Session of the General Assembly of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (GA14-Prep)

14 November 2017, Bangkok, Thailand

APT will organize the Preparatory Meeting for the 14th Session of the General Assembly of the APT (GA14-Prep) on 14 November 2017.The meeting will be hosted by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES), Thailand.

 

GA14-Prep aims to discuss and prepare final draft documents to be submitted to the 14th Session of the General Assembly of the APT (GA-14) in order to provide a smooth running of GA-14.

14th Session of the General Assembly of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (GA-14)

15 - 17 November 2017, Bangkok, Thailand

APT will organize the 14th Session of the General Assembly of the APT (GA-14) from 15 to 17 November 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand. Prior to GA-14, the Preparatory Meeting for the 14th Session of the General Assembly of the APT (GA14-Prep) will be held on 14 November 2017 at the same venue. The events will be hosted by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES), Thailand.

 

GA-14 will elect the President and two Vice-Presidents of the APT; consider the reports of the MC on the activities of the APT during 2015-2017 and give the direction to it; discuss the Strategic Plan of the APT for the period 2018-2020, the basis for the Annual Budget and Pledging of contributions, etc.; and elect the Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General of the APT for the term 2018-2021.

 

In addition, as the GA is the supreme organ of the Telecommunity that high-level representatives from Member Administrations are expected to attend, GA-14 will include a special session “Executive Panel on Building Smart Digital Economy through ICT”. This will be a good opportunity for the high-level representatives to discuss the implementation of the Brunei Darussalam Statement of the Asia-Pacific ICT Ministers on Building Smart Digital Economy through ICT adopted in 2014 as well as to provide mutually direction or trend of ICT and APT activities.

41st Session of the Management Committee of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (MC-41)

19 - 22 November 2017, Bangkok, Thailand

APT will organize the 41st Session of the Management Committee of the APT (MC-41) from 19 to 22 November 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand. The event will be hosted by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES), Thailand.

 

MC-41 will review the activities of the APT in 2017 as well as discuss the Work Programme and Annual Budget for 2018.
